"Only by admitting our lack of understanding can we begin our journey towards the final, perfect truth."

Betalial (Asc. Language: Betalial Text.png), the Tempest General, is the second eldest god in the Ascendant Pantheon, having been appointed to his position by Alpharoth shortly after the establishment of the Ascendancy. He rules over the largest Segmentum in the Ascendancy, Loeithkos Thyelozon. Betalial's Elemental Sphere is that of Wind, the ability to use magic to manipulate air currents and pressures. His Ascendant Virtue is Confusion, more accurately described as emotional turbulence originating from a lack of knowledge, or an inability to discern the nature of something. The members of his Ascendant hierarchy are called Betali.

Philosophy[edit | edit source]

Betalial's philosophy derives heavily from the works of 19th century German philosophy, such as the works Fichte and Hegel, and is centered around the concepts of dialectic and sublation. Driven by conscious acknowledgement of their lack of understanding of the universe, Betali constantly desire to learn and discover. Unlike other SymLinks, Betalial possesses no desire to decode the universe and introduce an artificial code of morality as a physical law: instead, he views the most perfect moral system as being a natural and inevitable occurrence, originating from the debate between sapient species and culminating in the synthesization of their beliefs into an ultimate and unending truth. Betali are obsessed with the duality of things, and often meditate on paradoxes, attempting to reconcile disparate elements into singular fact. This belief system is also what drives them to propagate the Ascendancy's crusades against sapient civilizations. The Betali believe they serve a necessary voice in the cosmic discourse, offering the greater Ascendant philosophy as rebuttal against societies covetous of peace, rule of law, and the common good. As every action has an opposite reaction, by bringing war against other species, the Betali educate those they destroy of their ways just as much as their victims offer new insights to the Betali. In the aftermath of the destruction, both societies go away with a deeper understanding of the universe than they did before, and every discharge of philosophies brings not just the Betali, but the entire universe a step closer to reality's final, perfect shape.
